What is a Stem Cell?

There are types of cells with many different duties in the human body in order for someone to go on with their life healthily. And the cells that form the structure of all tissues and organs in the body are called stem cells. Stem cells, aka the main cells, can turn into all of the cells within the organism. Therefore, they can turn into the type of cells that are needed and repair the organ and tissue damages or losses that occur due to injury, disease or other reasons.

The process of replacing or regenerating cells, tissues or organs for the purpose of performing their normal functions is called regenerative medicine. Cell therapy, which works on the basis of stimulating the body’s own repair mechanism to heal irreparable tissues and organs; It can be used in the treatment of diseases for which there is no proven treatment or treatment yet, such as spinal cord damage, muscular dystrophy, Alzheimer’s, cerebral palsy, cerebral palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, autism.

Why is a Stem Cell Made of?

Stem cell treatment is based on using stem cells to regenerate the damaged or missing cells, and to repair tissues or organs. It is a treatment that can be applied for different goals like correcting the damages that occur in the organs due to various diseases and preventing premature aging.

The effects of aging on the skin are seen in the ages of 28 – 30 as a result of the fibroblast cells, which produce the ligaments and collagen, dying at the rate of 2% annually. Consequently, lines and sagging occur on the skin. The fibroblast cells which are tied to each other crosswise starting to die causes the mesh to break off and the ligament to drop downward. The collagen-producing tissues also become misshaped and the skin wrinkles up, getting an old appearance. As cell death continues with aging, the skin starts to look older and older.

Skin rejuvenation with stem cell can be applied on the facial, hands, chin, neck and cleavage areas. The stem cell therapy performed on the face; the wrinkles and lines caused by the collagen and elastin fibers due to aging, looseness in the skin, spots and acne scars are eliminated. Thus, a rejuvenation is achieved on the skin.

The sagging, wrinkles and spots caused by the loss of skin and subcutaneous tissue due to aging in the neck, chin and cleavage area can be eliminated with skin cell therapy.

Stem cell therapy can be used for the veiny look and spots as a result of the decreasing in the skin tissue of the hands and looseness of the skin as well.

Who Are Eligible for Stem Cell?

Stem cell therapy for the skin can be performed on people who have unwanted looseness, spots, wrinkles, sagging and scars on their skin. Because the stem cells taken from the person are used for the treatment, it is not a likely situation to encounter any allergic reaction or side effects.

What Are the Stem Cell Therapy Methods?

The skin’s young look derives from; the tissues that hold the skin straight, ensure the ligament and skin quality, produce collagen and consist of cells called fibroblast. The fibroblast cells which make sure that the skin stays young decrease with time, though the skin can be given back its youth when they are reproduced in stem cell labs and given back to the skin. First, the fibroblast cells are taken from the skin in the skin rejuvenation method with stem cell therapy. Fibroblast stem cells are reproduced from a small biopsy taken from the back of the ear without disrupting the esthetics. The new cells are transplanted with injection to the regions where cells are dying. This procedure should be repeated 3 times at 30 – 45-day intervals after the stem cells are produced.

The procedure of taking tissues to send away for production takes about 15 minutes. 30 – 45 days are needed for the cells to grow at the stem cell labs that are approved by the Ministry of Health. While the first application is performed 30 – 45 days after the biopsy, it is preferred that the other two applications are done 30 days apart on average. The duration of the application might vary between an hour and a half to two hours.

What Are the Areas of Use for Stem Cell?

Stem cell treatment can be used to treat many different diseases what with the developments that occur every day in the field of bone marrow treatment. Stem cell treatment is used more and more often especially in the fields of neurology, traumatology, orthopedics and eye. Stem cell treatment can be used for the treatment of diseases such as bone marrow cancers, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, anemia, cancers of the organs, aplastic anemia, hereditary and congenital blood diseases, hereditary metabolic diseases, lymphoma, leukemia, Thalassemia, plasma cell disorders, diseases that occur due to immune deficiency and Multiple Myeloma in people who are the right age and have the right physical features. Also, skin rejuvenation with stem cell is frequently used as well.

The biggest advantage of the stem cell therapy applied on the skin is that it allows the replacement of what is missing and the repairing of the tissue. Although there are a sufficient number of cells in the body during youth, the number of cells decreases regionally with time. The goal in stem cell therapy is to make the number of stem cells in the area reproduce again.

How is Stem Cell Treatment Performed?

The stem cells and tissues obtained from a person’s own body can be reproduced in a laboratory as a result of the developments in medicine and technology. Thus, stem cells got started being used in the aesthetic and rejuvenation applications in addition to the treatment of many diseases. What type of cell can be used in which disease for treating diseases with stem cells, the protocol of use and the success rate vary depending on the person.

Today, stem cells are mostly used by being taken from the peripheral blood, bone marrow and umbilical cord blood of a person and the stem cell being transplanted into that person’s damaged area is called an autologous transplant; and the transplant of a stem cell taken from a different donor into the patient is called allogeneic transplant. And in some cases where the stem cell cannot be taken from the person and no matching donor can be found, a stem cell treatment called a haploidentical transplant with the stem cell taken from a partially-matching donor can be done.

The method of taking the stem cell when it is obtained from a person’s own body aside from being obtained from a fetus and a baby’s umbilical cord might also vary depending on the area and the treatment where it will be used.

It can be obtained by surgically taking a small piece of tissue, taking a little amount of fat from the abdomen with the liposuction method, surgically taking bone marrow from the femur or by taking blood from the veins. After the right stem cell is found, it can be injected to the patient intravenously or directly onto the damaged area. The success rate of stem cell treatment might vary depending on; the type and term of the disease, and the complications, though in some cases, the stem cell might not keep. In such a case, the stem cell transplant would have to be repeated.

How to Volunteer for Stem Cell Donation?

Receiving bone marrow or peripheral blood stem cells from the patient’s sibling, relatives or unrelated donor for treatment purposes is called allogeneic stem cell transplantation. In cases where allogeneic transplantation is the most suitable option, a donor must be found. For a successful transplant, genetic coding of the patient and the donor should be as similar as possible.

Obtaining stem cells from bone marrow is called bone marrow transplantation, while obtaining from blood is called peripheral blood stem cell transplantation and obtaining from umbilical cord of newborn baby is called cord blood stem cell transplantation.

In cases where stem cell donation is made from the person’s first-degree relatives, it is required that the donor is not younger than 2 years old and not older than 60 years old. Likewise, it is expected that the donor does not have any chronic diseases and his/her general health condition is good.

We use special needles for stem cell retrieval from the bone marrow.  In cases where stem cells are to be collected through the blood, the injection of the growth hormone called G-CSF under the skin allows the stem cells to pass from the bone marrow to the blood. Stem cells are reached from the blood taken by inserting a catheter into the arm. In both procedures, a healthy and new bone marrow is formed in the donor shortly after the stem cell transplant.
