Eyelid aesthetics is a surgical procedure applied to improve the appearance of the eyelids. Eyelid aesthetics, which can be applied to the lower eyelid, upper eyelid and both eyelids, can be applied to both men and women. While the reason for men to apply for eyelid aesthetics is usually functional, women prefer to have eyelid aesthetics for both functional and aesthetic reasons.
Since the skin around the eyes is much thinner and more delicate than the skin covering other parts of the face, it is much more resistant to wrinkles and wear. Various factors such as aging, stress, smoking can cause wrinkles around the eyes, sagging of the upper and lower eyelids, bruises and bags under the eyes over time. As a result, an old, sleepless and tired appearance appears on the face of the person. In cases where these complaints increase and the person’s appearance is disturbed, the most effective solution is under-eye aesthetic surgery.
The biggest reason for eyelid aesthetic surgeries is the tension in the eyelids due to aging and the weakening of the muscles that support the eyelids. As a result, excess fat begins to collect under and above the eyelids. Bags occur under the eyebrows, on the upper part of the eyelids and under the eyelids. Sagging of the eyelids both causes an older and drooping appearance around the eyes of the person and limits the upper and outer parts of the visual field, namely peripheral vision.
The eyelid aesthetic procedure contributes to the removal of wrinkles, sagging, bags or, cholesterol crystals on the skin of the eyelids, deformations such as capillary scars or deformations caused by tumor surgeries.
Choose Doctors who are Expert and Experienced in their Field
As is the case all aesthetic surgeries, the success of eyelid aesthetic surgeries largely depends on the success of the surgeon who performed the operation. The doctor who will perform eyelid aesthetic surgery should have a high level of knowledge of eye anatomy, nerve and vascular structure. Before the operation, the skin thickness of the patient, the muscle structure of the eyelids and the amount of fat should be carefully examined.
Although eyelid aesthetics is mostly completed under local anesthesia, general anesthesia may be needed in rare cases. Eyelid aesthetic surgery is completed in approximately 1-3 hours in the operating room environment. After eyelid aesthetic surgery, which is an effective long-term solution for eyelid problems, bruises and edema on the eyelids generally heal within 3-10 days. In case of pain after the operation, taking simple painkillers prescribed by the doctor can be an effective solution. Although the process may vary from person to person, the recovery period of eyelid aesthetic surgery is about 2 weeks.
Taking aspirin and similar blood thinners should be discontinued one week before eyelid aesthetic surgery, to reduce the risk of bleeding. Likewise, taking vitamin E with green tea and similar herbal teas should be suspended due to their blood-thinning properties. Conditions that increase the risk of eyelid aesthetic surgeries include thyroid, high eye pressure and hypertension. If the patient has these chronic diseases, it is very important to inform the doctor before the operation.
Bleeding may occur rarely during or after eyelid surgery. If there is a bleeding problem during the operation, emergency drainage treatment can be applied. Bleeding under the eyelids can both delay the healing process and cause scarring. In case of infection after eyelid aesthetic surgery, antibiotic treatment is applied to the patient. Although it is extremely unlikely that eyelid aesthetic surgery will cause blindness in the patient, bleeding during or after the operation may cause this. It is a problem that can be solved with early diagnosis and drainage. One of the most common and most feared complications in eyelid aesthetic surgeries is downward pulling of the eyelid, in other words ectropion. The risk of this complication is higher in patients who have undergone eyelid surgery for the second time. For the treatment of this condition, which occurs when the eyelid skin is taken more than necessary, the missing skin is completed with the skin taken from the upper eyelid.
Maximum care should be taken not to impair the ability to open and close during the interventions on the eyelid. In upper eyelid operations, in case of excessive skin removal, regardless of the sagging eyebrow tissue, the downward closing function and movement of the lid may be impaired. In this case, the surface of the eye remains open and dry, especially at night. Conditions such as stinging, redness and severe burning may occur and may progress to severe infections and loss of vision. Likewise, in cases where the fat in the middle of the upper eyelid is taken more than necessary, dimpling may occur in the eye. Depending on the incision made at an inappropriate height, the youthful appearance of the eyelid may deteriorate. When the herniation of the fat near the inner part is not intervened, the surgery is incomplete and the sagging in the region becomes more pronounced.
