One of the most prevalent forms of newborn ear abnormalities is prominent ear deformity, which affects around 5% of the world’s population. A noticeable ear deformity occurs when the ears protrude more than 2 cm from the side of the head. Typically, prominent ears are bilateral. It happens when the antihelical fold, which is part of the Y-shaped cartilage at the center of the outer ear, does not grow on a regular basis or develops insufficiently to allow the outside border of the ear to protrude. The auricle, turbinate (the bowl-shaped region of the ear right outside the ear canal) has excessive cartilage or is unusually deep in most individuals. As a result, the entire ear seems to be pushed away from the side of the head and disconnected. Prominent ear deformity, like other newborn ear abnormalities, is typically a congenital disorder. Many persons with large ears have a history of significant ear abnormalities in their families.

Prominent ears do not usually cause hearing issues, but they might create psychological anguish owing to their influence on face appearance. According to studies, prominent ears can be a stimulus for ridiculing of others, particularly youngsters, and can harm self-esteem owing to the aesthetic look it produces. Because of such psychological issues, it is usually asked that the noticeable ear deformity be removed.

How is Prominent Ear Surgery Performed?

Otoplasty is the surgical treatment used to address significant ear deformities. The surgical remodeling of the auricle is known as otoplasty. The goal might be to enhance the look of an existing abnormality. Reconstructive surgery to build or restore the outer ear may be preferred by people who have damage to their ears or congenital defects. Some people, however, elect to have surgery to enhance the look of their ears. This technique is sometimes referred to as otoplasty.

Ear surgery can be conducted under either local or general anesthesia. The desired effect is accomplished by removing some skin from behind the ear and molding the cartilage with sutures. Depending on the patient’s needs and the surgeon’s choices, multiple procedures may be used. It is a surgical treatment that takes around 1-2 hours to execute. Otoplasty may entail a number of surgical procedures to modify the shape, size, and projection of the ears. Incisions are frequently done on the posterior surface of the ear in the space between the ear and the skull for otoplasty. When incisions at the front of the ear are required, they are performed deep in the folds of the ear to conceal them. Internal, insoluble sutures are utilized to restructure and secure the cartilage. To seal the incision behind the ear, dissolving sutures are utilized.

The goal of prominent ear surgery is to restore the ears to their natural form, with normal projection and size, while also restoring balance and proportion to the ears and face. A natural appearance deflects unwanted attention away from the ears. Even tiny anomalies in the form, protrusion, or size of the ears can have a significant impact on a person’s image and self-confidence. As a result, prominent ear surgery should be tailored to each patient’s anatomy and changes in appearance.
